Here are the top five misconceptions about composting.
1. Composting smells.
Absolutely not! If anything, it smells like fresh earth. By covering your food scraps with newspapers, and having an active community of worms ready to devour them, there will be no problems.
2. The worms will escape!
If you follow the guideline, they will not escape. In fact, they will be hard to find because they hate the light and always hide.
3. It will take too much room in my house.
Composting bins can be as small as a 53 liter plastic rubber maid bin that’s 61cm wide. This is hardly longer than two school rulers together.
4. Its too much responsibility.
Composting is like a trash bin with a few easy maintenance rules. However, unlike trash, you do not need to leave your house to put the trash on the lawn or in a dumpster. Once you learn the rules, composting can be even fun!
5. It will attract maggots.
If you properly cover your compost with shredded bedding (newspapers, leaves) there should be no way any unwanted critters will find their way there.
