There are many ways to start a bin. This is one way we do it for indoor vermicomposting.
What you will need:
o 50-70 worms
o 53L Rubbermaid bin at your local general store. Bin must not be transparent.
o Bedding, aka, a whole bunch of shredded newspapers, or dried up leaves to fill up 15% of the bin.
o A drill.
o Mat that fits under the bin.
o Something to add space between mat and bin. This is to allow oxygen to pass throw. Two bricks? Four small containers?
o Spray bottle with filtered water.
o Good idea to start with a bit of compost and egg shells.
1. Drill at least 10 holes on every side of the bin. Including the bottom and the top lid. 2. Wash the bin. Make sure any rubber debris from drilling is not in the bin.
3. Throw in all the bedding.
4. Spray the filtered water throughout the bedding, roll it around to make sure you got all the bedding. Make sure its damp. Not too dry, not too moist.
5. Throw in the worms with the compost and egg shells in the bin, and cover it up with the bedding. They must be basically surrounded with bedding.
